Pioneer Men Place Fifth at Metropolitan Championships

Karas Selected as Krempecki Award Winner

Voyta Karas was named the winner of the Dick Krempecki Outstanding Senior Award at the conclusion of the Metropolitan Championships.
PISCATAWAY, N.J. (FEBRUARY 21, 2010) – Senior Voyta Karas (Brno, Czech Republic) was named the winner of the 2010 Metropolitan Collegiate Swimming and Diving Conference's Dick Krempecki Outstanding Senior Award as the William Paterson men's swimming and diving team finished fifth of 12 Division III teams at the three-day Metropolitan Championships.

In addition to contributing to school records in the 200 medley (1:38.59) and 400 medley (3:37.67) relays, Karas established a new school record in the 100 back (52.91). He was just touched out by .01 to place second in the 50 free (20.89) and swim a NCAA Championships B qualifying standard, finished fourth in the 100 free A Final (46.67), and was seventh in the 200 free A Final (1:44.43). He also helped lead the Pioneer 200 free relay to a seventh-place effort (1:27.53) and an ninth-place finish in the 800 free relay (7:23.51).

In the 1,650 free, sophomore Edward Zappile (Oak Ridge, N.J./Jefferson Twp.) was 15th (17:59.94), senior Danny Lynch (Rockaway, N.Y./St. Francis Prep) touched 17th (18:06.07), and freshman Joseph Pannullo (Hazlet, N.J./Raritan) finished 25th (21:36.19). Senior Stefan Rosales (Rahway, N.J./St. Joseph's-Metuchen) placed eighth in the B Final (2:04.54), freshman Tyler Grady (Ringwood, N.J./Lakeland Regional) won the C Final (2:04.14) and senior Kevin Thomas (Seaville, N.J./Ocean City) placed fourth in the C Final (2:06.60) of the 200 back.

Junior Andrew Scimeca (Lincoln Park, N.J./Boonton) placed seventh in the three-meter dive (349.75), and freshman Mazen Yousef (Toms River, N.J./Toms River East) finished third in the 200 breast C Final (2:20.92). In the 200 fly, sophomore Jeremy Lim (Clifton, N.J./Clifton) touched fourth in the B Final (2:04.94), Lynch was second in the C Final (2:09.79) and freshman Sebastian Schrils (Washington, N.J./Warren Hills Regional) placed fifth in the C Final (2:16.73).

The 400 free relay team of sophomore Brian Birkbeck (Absecon, N.J./Holy Spirit), senior Kirk Smith (West Orange, N.J./West Orange), Rosales and Thomas finished the meet by placing fifth in the B Final (3:21.68).
