Eight Pioneers Named to NJCBA All-State Team

Courter, Elia and Guadango Earn First-Team Accolades

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – William Paterson seniors Will Courter (Roseland, N.J./West Essex) and John Elia (Emerson, N.J./Pascack Valley) and junior Mike Guadango (Upper Saddle River, N.J./Northern Highlands) all received nods to the New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association (NJCBA) Division II/III All-State First Team, leading a list of eight Pioneer honorees announced June 11.

Junior Miguel Lugo (Jersey City, N.J./St. Mary's) and sophomore Mike Moran (Pompton Plains, N.J./Pequannock) were selected to the All-State Third Team, while Steve Coral (Totowa, N.J./Passaic Valley), Anthony Dorio (Lyndhurst, N.J./Lyndhurst) and Rob Somers (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional) earned spots on the All-Rookie Team.

A member of the Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Mid-Atlantic Region All-Third Team, the ECAC Metro Region All-Star First Team and the All-New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) First Team, Courter led the Pioneers with a .429 batting average (fourth in NJAC), a .521 on-base percentage (third in conference, 51st in Division III), six triples (tied-second in league, 21st in NCAA) and 54 runs scored (tied-second in NJAC, 67th in Division III). He also led the NJAC in runs/game (1.32, 57th in NCAA) and was fourth in triples/game (0.15, 39th in Division III), tied for fourth in walks (27), fifth in hits/game (1.68), tied for fifth in hits (69, 60th in Division III), sixth in walks/game (0.66), tied for seventh in total bases (97), eighth in slugging percentage (.602), 10th in RBI (40), and tied for 11th in doubles (13). Courter finished his three-year career tied for 10th place in WP history in triples (nine), and his 2009 totals placed him tied for seventh in triples, tied for ninth in runs scored, 10th in batting average and tied for 10th in hits on the Pioneer single-season charts. He reached base safely in 39 of 41 games this season, had 24 multi-hit and 13 multi-RBI games, posted three 10-game (March 7-19, March 20-April 4, April 5-18) hit streaks and ranked 29th nationally in toughest to strike out.

Named to the ABCA Mid-Atlantic Region, ECAC Metro Region and NJAC All-First Teams in the outfield, Elia tied for the NJAC lead and was fifth on the Pioneers' single-season home run list with 12 (34th in Division III). He was second in the conference statistics in RBI (53, 70th in NCAA), RBI/game (1.29, 72nd in NCAA) and homers/game (0.29, 43rd in Division III), third in slugging percentage (.716, 70th in Division III) and runs/game (1.29, 70th in NCAA), tied for third in total bases (111) and hit by pitches (nine), fourth in runs scored (53, 76th in Division III), ninth in hits (61) and average (.394), tied for ninth in sacrifice flies (three) and tied for 12th in stolen bases (10) as the team's cleanup hitter. Elia finished his two-year William Paterson career ranked eighth in program history in hit by pitches (15), and his nine hit by pitches this spring are tied for the seventh-best total on the Pioneer charts. He reached base safely in 37 of 41 games this season, posted 18 multi-hit and 16 multi-RBI games, and produced a 13-game hit streak (April 2-18).

Guadango, a three-time first-team all-NJAC pick (2007-09), was a member of the 2009 ABCA All-America Third Team and last year's ABCA All-America Second Team, as well as the 2008 and 2009 ABCA Mid-Atlantic Region All-First Teams and the 2007 All-Region Second Team. Also selected to this spring's ECAC Metro Region All-Star First Team, the right fielder paced the Pioneers this spring with 72 hits (tied-third in NJAC, 41st in Division III) and 17 doubles (tied-fourth in NJAC, 59th in NCAA), and he was second in the conference statistics in hits/game (1.80), tied for third in total bases (111), fourth in doubles/game (1.10, 70th in Division III) and RBI/game (1.20), tied for fourth in RBI (48), sixth in batting average (.419), steals/game (0.33) and slugging percentage (.645), seventh in stolen bases (13), and eighth in runs scored (44), home runs (six), homers/game (0.15) and runs/game (1.10). Guadango was named the NJAC and ECAC Metro Player of the Week (April 27) after hitting .625 (10-16) with two doubles, three home runs, 11 RBI, a sacrifice fly and five runs scored, compiling a 1.313 slugging percentage and a .588 on-base percentage the previous week. The junior outfielder currently ranks second in hits (208), tied for third in doubles (46), fourth in batting average (.422) and tied for ninth in hit by pitches (14) on the William Paterson career charts, and his 2009 season totals placed him in a tie for sixth place in both hits and doubles on the Pioneer lists. Guadango reached base safely in 34 of 40 games this year, had 24 multi-hit and 13 multi-RBI games, and began the season with a 10-game hit streak.

A fleet-footed leadoff hitter, Lugo was a member of the All-NJAC Second Team after hitting .383 (13th in NJAC) in 27 starts and 32 appearances, primarily at second base. The NJAC and ECAC Metro Region Co-Player of the Week April 6, hitting .464 (13-28) with two doubles, 14 RBI, 11 runs scored, a sacrifice and three stolen bases the previous week, Lugo posted a .452 on-base percentage (18th in conference) and a .517 slugging percentage to go along with 46 hits, six doubles, five triples (tied-fourth in NJAC), 34 RBI (tied-15th in league), 38 runs scored (tied-14th in NJAC) and eight stolen bases (tied-14th in conference). A first-year Pioneer after transferring from NJIT, Lugo was 30th in Division III in triples/game (0.16) and tied for 42nd in triples, and he had 15 multi-hit games and 11 multi-RBI efforts this spring.

Named to the All-NJAC Honorable Mention Team, Moran led the Pioneers and was tied for second in the conference statistics in stolen bases (19). One of three everyday players to hit better than .400 this season (.401, eighth in league), he was tied for first in the NJAC in steals/game (0.50), tied for eighth in triples (four), hits/game (1.55) and triples/game (0.11), ninth in on-base percentage (.476), 10th in hits (59), 15th in slugging percentage (.551), tied for 16th in total bases (81), tied for 17th in RBI (33) and 18th in RBI/game (0.87). The left fielder added 30 runs scored, two home runs and a .949 fielding percentage this spring, reached base safely in 35 of 38 games, had 17 multi-hit and 10 multi-RBI efforts, and posted a 15-game hit streak (March 15-April 2). A first-year Pioneer after transferring from the County College of Morris, Moran was named the NJAC and ECAC Metro Region Player of the Week March 23 after hitting .571 (12-21) with three doubles, a triple, seven RBI, 11 runs and four steals in six starts the previous week, adding an .810 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base percentage while walking six times.

One of three Pioneers to earn honorable-mention all-NJAC laurels, Coral tied for fifth in the conference in wins (6-1) with a team-best 4.58 ERA as a rookie, tossing 55.0 innings (tied-12th in NJAC) and compiling 28 strikeouts and a save in 12 appearances (seven starts). The third-team ABCA all-region pick pitched a complete-game 10-4 victory against Rowan in the NJAC Tournament May 2, one of his five victories this season against conference competition. For his efforts against the Profs, Coral was named the May 4 NJAC Rookie Pitcher of the Week.

An honorable-mention all-NJAC honoree this spring, Dorio hit .290 in 31 starts, primarily at shortstop, and posted 31 hits, six doubles, five triples, 19 RBI, 33 runs scored, 23 walks, and a .409 on-base percentage. Dorio was tied for third in the conference in triples/game (0.15, tied-36th in Division III), tied for fourth in triples (tied-42nd in NCAA), fifth in walks/game (0.68), tied for 10th in walks, and tied for 16th in runs/game (0.97). He reached base safely in all but three games this spring and had six multi-hit and eight multi-run efforts.

Somers hit .297 in 27 starts and 32 appearances, finishing the season as the Pioneers' designated hitter. The freshman posted 27 hits, three doubles, 17 RBI, 20 runs scored, 17 walks and a .409 on-base percentage, and reached base safely in 25 of 32 games.

William Paterson reached the finals of the 2009 NJAC Tournament, posting a 24-17 overall record and a 12-6 mark in conference play.
